ABSTRACT

Several archaeological excavations have revealed that the Talamanca area has been inhabited since pre-Roman times. However, historical data on population are scarce and isolated until the ninth century-the time when Talamanca began to gain importance following the increase of military pressure of the northern Christian kingdoms. Its geostrategic situation in the valley of the Jarama River made this place the first defensive bastion on the road connecting the Guadarrama Mountains with Toledo.
