ABSTRACT

The formation of shear band and the theory of progressive failure of soils are key topics focused greatly both in solid mechanics and geomechanics around the world. At present, more and more attention is being paid to the generation mechanism, formation conditions, and affecting factors of the shear band in the geotechnical engineering field. The appearance of the shear band has great influence on the mechanical properties, strength characteristics of soil and the stability of slopes. Common failure phenomena in engineering practice, such as the landslide of dams, collapse of foundation pits and instability of foundations and so on, are all connected with the soil deformation localization and shear failure. Therefore, the study on the shear band from onset to complete has important theoretical and practical significance.
