ABSTRACT
The overall objective of the barrier management system is to protect the facility against the defined risk, either by preventing or limiting each of the specified major accident hazards. The barrier management system will be area specific or system specific, as the risk picture is differentiated throughout the areas of the facility. Major risk hazards such as blowout, gas leaks, fire and explosions, loss of stability and collisions are more or less generic. The handling of risk and the barrier systems may however be facility specific, especially when it comes to the barrier elements, representing the lower level of a barrier system.
