Review of risk concepts and perspectives in risk assessment of maritime transportation

Risk assessment methods for maritime transportation have received a growing interest in recent years and relevant organizations have provided recommendations to maritime authorities on the use of specific risk management tools (IALA 2009; IMO 2010). In the wider risk research literature, there is a relatively recent focus on foundational issues, with calls for increased discussion, reflection and analysis regarding applied terminology, principles and perspectives (Aven 2012a; Rosa 2010).
