ABSTRACT

Indonesia is an archipelago located between the continents of Asia and Australia, as well as the Pacifi c and Indian oceans. Consequently, both oceans have affected the diversity of seaweed species. Indonesia possesses a largely coral reef coastline, 95.181 km in length, and occupies an area of 7.1 million km2 (Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries 2010). The archipelago consists of more than 17,508 islands (Working Group of Geostrategy and National Resilience 2012). Kalimantan is the largest island, followed by Papua, Sulawesi, Sumatera and Java islands. Many islands have coastlines environmentally suitable for seaweed culture.
