ABSTRACT
As glucose equilibrates across the plasma membrane, it gets metabolized, leading to a cascade of reactions: increase of the [NADH]:[NAD+] redox ratio and the cellular [ATP]:[ADP] ratio, closure of the ATP-sensitive potassium channels (KATP), plasma membrane depolarization, opening of the voltagedependent calcium channels, inux of intracellular Ca2+ ions, and stimulation of insulin exocytosis (Figure 14.1c).
