ABSTRACT

Contrast this with my experience in talking with a person who lives in a large city in a Central Plains state. I asked him about his experiences in living in a state that does not oer human rights protections for LGBT persons. He is in a partnership with another gay man. He told me that both he as well as other professional people he knows feel very much discriminated against. ey do not feel comfortable in discussing their sexual orientation with other people, because of the fact that they might be discriminated against in their professional lives. Especially relevant is the fact that he is well-educated and looking for a position. Like many gay people in that situation, he does not want to move to another location because he loves his home. But he feels that if the information about his sexual orientation were to come out, then he might well lose a chance at any jobs he would be interested in having, especially in today’s tight job market.
