ABSTRACT

Another “Great Divide” in our country involves the separation between people in the broader society and those who have become part of what some have called the prison industrial complex. “Federal and state corrections facilities held over 1.6 million prisoners at the end of 2010-approximately one of every 201 U.S. residents” (“Fact Sheet: Re-Entry” 2012). Certain racial and ethnic groups have been identied as having disproportionately large percentages of incarceration. However, no one knows how many lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people are incarcerated in this country: A national survey would seem to be called for, because policy decisions are driven by data. Although we do not know how many such people are incarcerated, we can identify what some of the issues are that might face incarcerated LGBT people, based upon relatively limited literature on the subject.
