Coffee beans are roasted, ground, and brewed to produce one of the most popular beverages in the world, with over 600 billion cups (ICO 2011a) consumed each year. Coffee is produced in over 60 countries, mainly by smallholder farmers (ICO 2011a). It is one of the five most traded and consumed agricultural products worldwide (FAO 2009), providing livelihood for over 125 million people around the world
