ABSTRACT

Cocoa, Theobroma cacao L., is the main ingredient for making chocolate, but it is also an important ingredient for cosmetics. Despite the generalized use of the word cocoa in English for both the plant and the product (beans, powder), some suggest two names to refer to them. Bartley (2005), who worked with cocoa botany and breeding for more than 53 years, states that cacao should be used for the tree or plant, while cocoa should be used for the product. According to him, the early literature in English used cacao, as was commonly used in Latin American countries, but “At some time in the past, the word ‘cocoa’ entered the English language, generally accepted to have been a mistake.” e same opinion is expressed by Rosenblum (2005).
