ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a summary of Electrical Wiring Interconnection System (EWIS) design considerations, regulatory requirements, and trends associated with EWIS. A major factor affecting aircraft availability is the integrity of individual systems and the equipment supporting the flow of data and electrical energy to those aircraft systems. A well-designed and maintained EWIS interconnects aircraft subsystems and enables reliable aircraft operation. Programs are encouraged to apply the version of AS50881 to their EWIS design and installation since it includes the latest safety and design practice improvements but should also consider the implementation cost. Additional detailed guidance on installing and maintaining EWIS components can be found in Aerospace Recommended Practice 4404. The EWIS design is done at two levels: the physical and functional. The functional is addressed with the development of circuit designs supporting the non-EWIS systems, and this can be done with any modern circuit design software. The physical routing of the EWIS is designed with 3D computer-aided design/computer-aided engineering software.
