A new modified Hoek-Brown failure criterion considering the effect of the intermediate principal stress and its applicability analysis

In this paper, to take account of the effect of the intermediate principle stress, a new explicit expression of three-dimensional Hoek-Brown (MGHB) criterion was presented. Quantitative comparison has also been made with three other strength criteria (the Hoek-Brown (HB) criterion, the Drucker-Prager (DP) criterion, and the Mogi (1971) criterion) by applying them to polyaxial test data for four rock types at a variety of stress states.
