ABSTRACT

Worldwide investments in road infrastructure increased substantially in the last decades. Therefore, road agencies have been challenged to efficiently manage their assets under the requirements of the served community. To deal with this, an individual management of the main road assets is the most commonly implemented practice. However, recently, emerged the concept of asset management, adding two new dimensions to the traditional approach: integration and business-like objectives. Therefore, the development of integrated asset management systems have been detailed studied in recent years. Nevertheless, few countries have implemented this tool to manage their road networks. The present paper describes an ongoing R&D project, whose main objective is to develop a GIS-based integrated asset management system. This new platform incorporates a decision-aid tool supported by performance and optimization models combined with an innovative monitoring system.
