ABSTRACT

Preventive maintenance of concrete structures by application of a surface penetrant is being en couraged for more widespread use in the future. Application is generally performed with a roller, brush, or spray. However, the practical use of other easy construction methods is needed while deterioration of the existing concrete structure occurs. Thus, new application methods are being considered: for example, allonges. This paper suggests a seal-type surface penetrant application method. Five types of surface penetrants were applied downward and upward to specimens with a roller, seal, brush, or spray. The penetrant depth was then measured. Also the chloride penetration depth was evaluated after immersion in saltwater. The results confirmed that the influence of the application method on the penetrant and chloride penetration depths was small.
