ABSTRACT

Overturning accidents in China show the sensitivity to eccentric vehicle load of box girder bridges with column piers. Based on the on-site surveys of existing bridges in Shanghai district, typical structure forms and parameters of box girder bridges with column piers are concluded. Different kinds of damages related to overturning stability are summarized as well. Based on the mechanism of overturning; a routine inspection form contains 20 items is laid down for bridge managers to check the overturning stability of box girder bridges. Scenarios that may temporarily decrease the overturning stability of bridges during maintenance period are summarized. A real case for pavement retrofit strategy is studied. The results indicate that different strategies have quite different degree of influence on the overturning stability of bridges. Thus, overturning stability of this kind of bridge should be check carefully when develop the maintenance strategy.
