ABSTRACT

While slope stability analysis is one of the classical problems of geotechnical engineering, it mathematically reduces to a multimodal function optimization problem to search a critical slip surface and is still a subject of research and development. This paper describes a method of computing safety factors for natural slopes with an efficient non-circular slip surface search algorithm, which is based on the force equilibrium given by the Spencer method. Then, a method to calculate the limit state exceedance probability of natural slope was presented to use a low-discrepacy sequence Monte Carlo method. The result of the analysis shows that the proposed method is practically useful and efficient for the limit state exceedance probability calculation.
