ABSTRACT

Tozaki Bridge was completed in 1985 and comprises of three and four span continuous steel box girder bridges with a total span length of 1,010m on the Kobe-Awaji-Naruto Expressway in Japan. Since this bridge faces to the Pacific Ocean, the bridge is in a severe marine condition. During a routine bridge inspection, it was identified that the corrosion on reinforcing bars caused loose and delaminated concrete on the surface of the piers. Three types of reinforcing bars were installed in the pier, including surface, lateral, and main reinforcements. Since the concrete cover of the surface reinforcement is relatively thin, it was assumed that the corrosion of surface reinforcement caused loose and delaminated concrete. Several detailed investigations were conducted. It was identified that surface reinforcement is severely corroded and main reinforcement is relatively sound condition. Based on the detailed investigation, the methods for repair and rehabilitation are selected and carried out.
