ABSTRACT

The major reasons of a bridge collapse are earthquake and deterioration such as corrosion and fatigue. In recent years, there has been a great concem of deterioration of civil infrastructures in Japan. This study aims at developing the long term monitoring system for bridge collapse detection. The system employs solar cell, because the power supply is one of the most serious problems. The system consists of five parts. One is sensor. A range meter using two ultrasound sensors were employed. The second is data acquisition microcomputer board of Arduino. The third is power supply with solar cell, rechargeable battery and an IC board. The fourth is radio communication of ZigBee. The computer measures the distance every four minutes When the distance is longer than a certain length, the computer sends a message to the server. The fifth is a server connecting to the Internet. Proof test of the battery was conducted. During the period of 4 months, although power-down phenomenon was observed three times on rainy days, the system showed the availableness.
