ABSTRACT
As a neighbor of Earth, Mars has been the focus of scientific interest throughout recorded history. Before the advent of the telescope in 1609, early astronomic observers deduced two things about this planet. First, the sidereal period of Mars has been determined to be 687 Earth days (1.88 Earth years); second, the retrograde motion of Mars has been observed.
