ABSTRACT

South Africa (SA) is a country with high violent crime rates, and many potential international visitors are cynical and uncertain whether it will be safe to visit SA. Also many SA citizens live in fear and can concur that SA is a violent high-risk country where man-made threats ourish. A high number of SA citizens immigrate to countries such as Australia to move away from the violent crime issue. However, SA has hosted several global events without any substantial incident occurring. Clearly, a few dynamics are at play and it is important to sketch an overview of current political, social, and policing issues in SA to encapsulate why we are able to host large-scale events with success.
