ABSTRACT

Relations between Aboriginal peoples and the police, historically and in contemporary times, have oen been characterized by a high degree of mutual suspicion and hostility. In addition, Aboriginal communities confront a variety of social and policing problems that are distinctive and typically more serious than those in nontribal communities. e rural, isolated nature of most Aboriginal communities and the disproportionate presence of poverty, as well as associated social problems create a distinctive geographic and community context for Aboriginal law enforcement ocials.
