ABSTRACT

Police students have assumptions about what kind of knowledge they need to learn during basic training to function well in their future job. These assumptions, which are based on their past experiences, are not always what the police academy provides. Consequently, tensions arise among the police students’ expectations of what police work requires, what the police academy provides, and what police work actually entails (Bäck, 2010; Haarr, 2005; Heslop, 2011; Karp & Stenmark, 2011). In this chapter, it is argued that these tensions affect police students’ training and learning during basic training.
