ABSTRACT

In this paper, we improve the IC measure proposed by Meng et al. [13] and propose a new IC measure using only ontology. They considered the depth of a concept, the number of its hyponyms, and the depth of every hyponym for a given concept in their measure. Intuitively, the height of a concept has an effect on the IC of the concept. We extend their measure by taking the height (height from the bottom concept) of a concept into account. Our method combines the depth of a concept, its hyponyms and the height of the concept. The experimental results show that our approach is able to provide more accurate similarity assessments with regards to human judgments and has significant performance in SNOMED CT. The proposed IC measure makes obvious improvement to Meng et al. measure.
