ABSTRACT

Email. T.38 defined the real-time data transmission between fax machines or between a fax machine and a network terminal. Figure 1 shows the T.37 fax system model.

According to T.37 proposal, the 3rd fax machines of the sender and the receiver synchronize and communicate with local fax gateway. Facsimile data is stored in the gateway, and transmitted by the email system. Email system stored and forwarded the data, so it isolated the real-time 3rd fax transmission and non-real-time internet email transmission, which make the facsimile data stored and forwarded via the Internet. At the same time, the email format and TIFF file format are important to extract fax from email. The email format which T.37 proposals required is MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) (Freed 1996a) that is widely used, while the TIFF file format is based on RFC3949.
