ABSTRACT
2The purpose of this introductory chapter is to (1) describe the worldwide diversity of chondrichthyan fishes, their relationships to each other, their species richness (i.e., biodiversity), and general habitat utilization pattern and (2) characterize their life histories, briefly review fishery impacts, and summarize their conservation status.
