ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: This article is focused on systematization of national journalism theories. Modern research literature entertains notions of the demise of journalism; accordingly, there is no need for journalism theory. However, one can arrive at other decisions when turning to historical roots of the press-related knowledge. Conceptual representations of journalism have emerged naturally, as a reflection of its development and growing influence. Archeology of the history of journalism reveals the origins of its theoretical differentiation into several disciplinary directions that still exist and evolve. Theories of journalism have national-cultural specificity that is not effaced in the modern world. Finally, research into their origins creates basis for the structuring of theoretical knowledge concerning journalism and media on national and world scale. Focused study in the given direction is especially topical for Central and East European countries. This project was developed at St. Petersburg State University, Russia.
