ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: The analysis and characterization of the inks used on manuscripts constitute a fundamental part of any codicological study and help define the criteria and treatments to be applied during the conservation and restoration process. Comparing the evolution of the inks over time can also determine the possible variations in their use for a given typology of document. The present work-as part of a wider research project to characterize materials used in Arabic bindings-outlines the findings from the application of different examination methods and analysis techniques to the original dated manuscripts from the CSIC School of Arabic Studies Library (Granada, Spain). As the documents under study derive from a period spanning the 12th-19th centuries, the study has successfully ascertained the peculiarities of the materials employed in producing Arabic manuscripts at different times in history.
