General considerations Trauma remains one of the leading causes of death and disability throughout the world. In the USA, it is the most common cause of death in nearly all age groups under 45 (Figure 14.1). Motor vehicle accidents remain the single most common cause of trauma-related mortality, followed by gunshot wounds and falls.
