ABSTRACT

The lymphatic system works together with the blood vascular system. Nutrients, gases, hormones, globulins, etc., circulating in the bloodstream leave the circulation system through leakage between the tight junctions of the blood vessel endothelium or direct transendothelial transport, caveolar movement, etc., to feed the tissues. However, the leaked-out excess uid together with plasma proteins (which could be as much as 3 L daily at the capillary beds; Marieb and Hoehn 2013) residing in the tissue spaces cannot be retrieved by the circulation system because the permeability back into the blood capillaries is not high enough. The lymphatic system, along with the kidneys, is another contributor of maintaining the blood volume.
