ABSTRACT
Viviparity (live-bearing reproduction) is a widespread reproductive pattern of considerable biological signifi cance and a subject of intensive ongoing investigation. Viviparity in squamate reptiles is a particular focus of such research, with particular regard to its signifi cance, the mechanisms by which it is accomplished, and how and why it has so frequently evolved (Blackburn 2000a).
