ABSTRACT

Chronic degenerative diseases have recently become one of the main health problems worldwide, particularly those affecting the nervous system. All these disorders are characterized by degeneration of specifi c cell populations and include multiple ailments in aging humans. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is without a doubt the most frequent cause of dementia, representing approximately 50-60 per cent of all cases. Its high prevalence puts this pathology among the principal causes of death in adults, after cancer and cardiovascular diseases.
