ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors cover both fundamental concepts and practical applications of Fiber Laser – Based Sensing (FLS). A range of fiber-optic sensors have been commercially deployed for industry applications, for example, for structure health monitoring of large-scale civil infrastructures such as bridges, dams, and tunnels and performance monitoring of key equipment and machinery. There are some techniques to introduce the phase shift reported, such as local heating, partial shielding exposure, local post exposure, and fibber mask dithering. FLS has been developed aiming at high performance such as fast system response, high channel count, and better long-term performance with low cost. Fiber lasers are being widely used in fiber sensor systems where they are used as light sources or sensing elements. Fiber lasers are the lasers developed with special doped fiber sensor systems. The authors hope that the chapter provides a useful reference and that it will encourage further research and development of novel technologies for high-performance laser-based sensors.
