Securing drinking water supply during extreme drought— learnings from South Australia

ABSTRACT: The Murray-Darling Basin, Australia’s largest river system, experienced the most significant drought ever recorded from 2001 to 2010-the Millennium Drought. With record low flows and storage volumes, authorities struggled to meet the demands of irrigators, drinking water supplies and aquatic ecosystems, especially in the system’s lower reaches in South Australia.
