1 INTRODUCTION

The inlet/outlet of pumped storage power station has characteristics of two-way flow, in which the water flow regime is complex. For the lower reservoir, it is out let when to generate power, and it is inlet when to pump water. Because the size of inlet/ outlet has a greater impact on its hydraulic characteristics, so choos ing the right size of inlet/outlet is an important content when to design pumped storage power station. When hy dropower station pumps water and generates power, hydraulic loss should be reduced to a lesser degree, other wise it will affect the overall efficiency of the pumped storage power station, and at the time of the outflow, the inlet/outlet should be designed not only to en sure economic rationality but also to ensure the water can be reasonably diffused, which will effectively reduce the outflow velocity. At present, for the study of side in let/outlet of pumped storage power station are mainly on physical model tests, and a lot of achievements have been made, but the expense, person and time that need to input are also relatively high because of limitations of cost, site condition and test schedule etc, however, numeri cal simulations of the above shortcomings of model tests have a good complement. With the develop ment of computer technology, numerical simulation shows an increasingly important role in solving these prob lems.
