ABSTRACT

Because of an increasing population, rapid industrialization and economic growth, China is facing a Gordian knot: large-scale environmental pollution and energy shortage. For example, For example, A 2006 article by the Chinese Embassy in the UK stated that approximately 300 million nationwide have no access to clean water. Almost 90% of underground water in cities are affected by pollution and as well as 70% of China’s rivers and lakes (Miao Hong, 2006). As reported by World Bank in 2007, a total of 16 of the world’s top 20 most polluted cities are in china (Christine Lagorio, 2007). A fragile ecological environment is becoming a critical problem hindering China’s development.
