An extremely important factor influencing the design of any opto-mechanical system is the environment to which that system is to be exposed during its lifetime. Generally, that environment has different embodiments for operation, storage, and shipment conditions. It also differs according to the intended use of the system since an instrument to be used in a laboratory with a controlled environment would be expected to experience a different set of conditions from one designed for military use worldwide or in space applications.
