ABSTRACT

Mice have been important subjects in biomedical research for decades. The original reasons for selecting this species as an animal model undoubtedly focused on its small size, relatively docile nature, and fecundity. Thus, many animals could be bred and maintained in a conned area for little cost over a short period. More recent advances in genetic and genomic research have established mice as a major model system for modern translational medicine initiatives.17,40 These features have made mice a favorite mammalian model for exploring basic mechanisms of health and disease.
