ABSTRACT

Current studies on cellular automaton based traffic flow model are mostly focused on two-lane areas. This is due to the simplicity of the model of two-lane. The lane changing cases can be determined easily and the lane changing rules are easier to develop. Besides, the studies about double lane cellular automaton are relatively mature, which make it easier when applied to practical problems. However, with the increasing urban transportation development and traffic flow, new roads are often built with three lanes or more, leading to the more complex lane changing behavior. Thus the twolane cellular automaton is limited in the practical application.
