ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: This paper evaluated the water resources security of Guangxi province in China based on the modified water resources ecological footprint model from 1997 to 2012. The results showed that : (1) Over the years, the water resources ecological footprint of Guangxi province was moving undulating and per capita value was generally significantly decreased. (2) The water resources carrying capacity in Guangxi province was largely in corresponding period, but the undulation was obvious and the amplitude was largely an overall downward trend. (3) Guangxi province showed the water resources ecological surplus over the years and the trend was consistent with water resources carrying capacity, indicating that local water resources were in a safe state. (4) Guangxi province water resources ecological pressure index was undulant, but overall showed a rising trend. Based on the index, the study have discovered that in the vast majority years, the development and utilization of local water resources were in a very safe state, but recently the level of security had declined. (5) Using the traditional calculation method, Guangxi province water resources security had been over estimated. Lastly, based on the model, this article puts forward some counter-measures for improving the security of the water resources in Guangxi province; including the reduction of the amount of water used for agriculture, industry’s focus on efficient use of water, reducing domestic water consumption and increase water conservancy project exploitation and construction.
