ABSTRACT

Iodine is a constituent of thyroid hormone (TH) and is an essential micronutrient for normal growth, development and function. Iodine deficiency (ID) causes an enlargement of the thyroid gland, physical function and mental retardation. Mild to moderate ID results in loss of intelligence points, learning disabilities and poor human resource development. The former being the tip of the iceberg and latter constitutes the invisible bulk of the pyramid [1].
