ABSTRACT

This talk follows the recent tradition of Broadbent (and plenary) lectures addressing ‘systems’. The reason why the question remains pressing is because the nature of the systems that Ergonomics confronts seems to be changing. Ergonomics has always been concerned with the human-machine system on both a micro-and a macroscale, but has often treated these as distinct species of problem requiring different thinking and methods. In this talk I am interested in exploring what they have in common.
