ABSTRACT

The ability to comprehend and communicate one’s ideas in a written text is critical in academic life. Writing is a recursive process involving both cognitive and metacognitive skills (Larkin, 2009). Sound writing is critical for academic and vocational achievement (Graham and Perin, 2007). Writing consists of lower-order skills such as transcription and spelling, and higher-order skills such as ideation. Ideation includes complex, high-level cognitive processes such as planning, translating, and reviewing (Hayes and Flower, 1980; Scardamalia and Bereiter, 1986).
