ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter is to review the multi-functional (MF)

requirements of some specific exemplar tribological devices and

show how these can be better realised by applying appropriate

thin coating to their material surfaces. After a brief description

of the nature of relevant basic tribological environments and

contact mechanics, three application sectors are reviewed in

depth: bio-medical device bearing surfaces, automotive piston-ring

components and cutting tools for machining applications.
