ABSTRACT

Anal condylomata are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), most commonly subtypes 6 and 11. They are usually acquired through sexual contact with an infected person, although HPV infection may be acquired in the absence of anal intercourse. Typically, condylomata will increase in size and number, although spontaneous regression does occur. These lesions are associated with the development of anal intraepithelial neoplasia (AIN) in up to 35 percent and, occasionally, a squamous cell cancer will be found among the condylomata.
