ABSTRACT
Notwithstanding the good outcome of the overwhelming proportion of operations performed, surgeons understand only too well what a potentially hazardous place the operating room (OR) can be. The hazards are borne primarily by the patient undergoing the operation, but can extend to every member of the surgical team, as well as to the occasional observer or visitor. The risks include physical injury, inadvertent infection, surgical complications, and even psychological trauma.
