ABSTRACT
In 1981, the first paper on laparoscopic appendicectomy by Kurt Semm was rejected on the grounds that the technique was unethical. From this rather inauspicious start, the laparoscopic approach to appendicectomy has evolved to become the standard approach in many institutions.
