ABSTRACT

The operation was developed in the 1960s by Nils Kock of Gothenburg, Sweden, with the original intention to create an artificial urinary bladder fromsmall intestine. The resulting construction was subsequently applied to patients who required a proctocolectomy for ulcerative colitis (and selected patients with Crohn’s disease). Its aim was to improve quality of life, by creating a continent ileostomy which did not require the use of a stoma appliance. This was achieved by the formation of a reservoir combined with aninverted nipple valve fashioned from the terminal segment of the small bowel.
