ABSTRACT

Single incision laparoscopic (SIL)-assisted colectomy is an innovative variant of minimally invasive surgery. The first documented colectomy performed via a single incision was reported in the medical literature in 2008.1, 2Standard laparoscopic-assisted surgery for resection of the colon involves multiple trocar sites and an incision to extract the bowel and assist with performing the anastomosis. For SILS, a single incision alone through the abdomen (usually the umbilicus) allows trocar placement, extraction of the mobilized bowel and an extracorporeal anastomosis.
