ABSTRACT

In order to understand what is required for reconstruction, one must consider the requirements for the perineum. It must be sufficiently padded to cover bony prominences, sufficiently elastic to allow the hips and symphysis pubis to move and stretch, and sufficiently taut and robust to support the abdominal contents. In addition, the reconstructed perineum must not lose its integrity while at the same time providing openings for micturition, defecation, intercourse, and childbirth.
