ABSTRACT

Competitive sports, also known as athletic sports, are a subsystem of big sports systems. Adopting the form of athletic contest, competitive sports aim at winning games medals and refreshing the record. Chinese competitive sports began in March, 1959. Guotuan Rong, a Chinese table tennis player, captured the first world championship for China at the 25th World Table Tennis Championships held in Germany. Thereafter Chinese competitive sports were on track and competitive sports career grew increasingly prosperous. By 2012, the total number of world champions won by Chinese athletes had reached 2326 [2] since the founding of the P.R.C. sixty years ago. The functions of competitive sports were mainly divided into four aspects: creating a new diplomatic means, enhancing the sense of national identity, strengthening the national consciousness and playing a guiding role in mass sports.
